The club, season by season

The 1996-97 team beat Juventus 3-1 in Munich to win the European Cup, with Sammer as libero in the season he was European Footballer of the Year, and Riedle scoring twice in the final. The 2012-13 side is the one people picture when they think of the modern club: Klopp's pressing team with Lewandowski, Reus, Götze and Hummels, four goals past Real Madrid in a semi-final and then beaten by Bayern at Wembley with two minutes left.

In the draft

The two squads share no players, and only one player across both is rated 90 — Lewandowski, in the season before he left for Bayern. This is the pool for drafting a functioning team without a superstar in it: strong through the middle, credible in every position, and reliant on the tournament being decided by the XI rather than by one player.

Every Borussia Dortmund squad below can turn up when you spin the wheel — the highest-rated of them all is Robert Lewandowski (91), and the best XI these 2 squads could theoretically assemble averages 86.6. You don't get to pick: the wheel decides which squad you draft from, one pick at a time. That is the whole shape of it: you draft your own XI first, then find out what it was worth.

Players in more than one of them

None. Not one player appears in two Borussia Dortmund squads in this database — the sides were rebuilt completely between them, which is rarer than it sounds: at Milan, Maldini is in all four.
